… I don’t like Sonally. I think it’s just stereotypical, and nonsensical. I’d argue that it strips both characters in the ship in question, because everytime they’re paired up, Sally gets bossy around Sonic, and cannot seem to stop barking at him like he’s some dog. Sonic’s core personality traits – his freedom, his ability to take care of himself, the works – is often removed to make Sonic nothing more than a dog Sally can throw at her enemies. It’s not good for either party, and the more you think of it, the more it falls apart because of how clashed the two are.

Sonally is an example of ‘Opposites Attract’ done the wrong way.

- Was only ever very polite and had a big smile when I met him and had a photo together with him, him signing my stuff exactly where I wanted it signed.
- When hearing of a female fan having an anxiety attack at a Summer of Sonic event out of worry that she wouldn’t meet him and Naka, swore that he and Naka would make time for her despite the constraints of the fan convention.
- Answers fan questions despite quite a few of them being stupid.
- Actually has some standards for the series and makes his misgivings known when overseeing material.

I believe that part of the reason why I caught onto several of IDW’s writing flaws and bad habits earlier than most readers (overusing lyrics in place of dialogue, flippant use of super forms, Sonic’s characterization being a little off, Sonic announcing his philosophy to people who already know him by the back of their hand), was because I was going in with the knowledge that Flynn and the gang were handling it, meaning that I was taking notes on what lessons they had learned from Archie. Rather than going in as if it were written by newcomers with no prior experience with the franchise.

With that mindset, it became clear early on that the answer was a disappointing “fuck all”.

You have awaken ancient memories in me, because when I first got into the fandom (so around 2004-2006), I read that information being written as if it was canon, in a list of characters bios. Even back then I was like “Olgilvie…? What kind of name is that?”

I had no idea that it came from Archie and that Archie was an absolute mess :^) but then I kept playing the games, ignored Archie, and forgot about that fun trivia since, y'know, in the games Sonic is Sonic.

They also gave Tails’ role as ‘best friend’ to Sally Acorn, or am I the only person remembering how Sonic brushed off Tails’ concerns about the robot Sally for no reason?

I agree to the best friend part, but am more understanding of the mechanic part because at this time SEGA gave them NOTHING in terms of source material for Tails.

I’m also forgiving of it as one, it’s hands down the best Sonic cartoon and two they intended to have Tails become a legit sidekick in season 3.

What do you mean ‘no canon material’? The games were literally right there, yet Hurst rejected them because he, an old timer, didn’t understand how they told their stories. Sonic literally showcases his go getter attitude within the first few seconds of booting up the game. Eggman is shown off to be instant and willing to attack Sonic head on in the first boss battle. Tails and Sonic are the default option when you start Sonic 2 from the beginning.

There was literally things Hurst could pick up from the beginning of he bothered to play more than a nanosecond of the game. But he didn’t.

Yeah I think… EVERY Sonic media at the time picked up those basic concepts of Sonic being the hero, Tails being the little brother and Robotnik being the bad guy, which the show DID.

The thing is though, for a serious animated series a story featuring two protagonists and a villain is a little limiting, so they added more characters.

As for Tails being sidelined, ONCE AGAIN in season 3 he was supposed to step up,it was supposed to go on for like 4 seasons I think.

And again as for canon material I mean backstory, and you know what is NEVER mentioned in the manual for Sonic the hedgehog 2?

TAILS’ TECH SKILLS! It wasn’t until Tails’ Adventure a game released TWO years where Tails’ tech skills are visually shown.

The only other indicator is him piloting the Tornado, but good pilot skills don’t necessarily mean super genius, Sonic’s a pilot and he’s not a genius!

Western writers were going in blind building world’s around a basic premise of two games, and for the most part I think Sonic Satam made something pretty interesting out of it.

Tails Tech Skills were shown off In Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and the Japanese manual mentioned Tails being interested in technology.

They seemed fine with having Sonic, Tails and Eggman for AoStH as the main three, as well. Also, why would anyone want to wait for Tails to 'get better’ in season 3, when both the games and AoStH showed him capable already?

Your argument is a moot point, because Hurst made mention that he looked at the games and thought he couldn’t get anything from them, when in fact he could. Also, he took away everything that Sonic, Tails, and Eggman had in order to prop up his own special princess OC, Sally. Seriously, take a look at one of the drafts for SatAM someday, Sally may as well be a Mary Sue.

Tails'progression: See that’s because of a thing called CHARACTER development, they wanted Tails to start out as the little brother but become into his own later. FOLLOW UP to that, even in Adventures Tails started out as a sidekick before showing his tech skills and saving the day on his own, so you’re essentially criticizing Satam for doing something Adventures did.

My moot point: WOW, way to show your cards with the Mary Sue comment. But yes, she was generic/notthebest in the original drafts… which is why they friggin CHANGED HER to be more of an action girl, so what the hell are you even complaining about?! Finally, everything from Tails…AND Sonic and Eggman?! Yeah,no, they were still the hero and villain they were if not more so, Sonic had a god damn emotional arc and EVERYTHING with Uncle Chuck!

Oh, it GUESSED using the fact that the series is ABOUT Sonic vs Eggman, Tails is Sonic’s side kick, that the badniks look like how they look in the games, that the chaos emeralds and the Tornado exist, that the world has a surrealist design, and referencing the names of several game zones? You know, all stuff that was readily evident in the games which SatAM completely disregarded?

Also, no, it was not a “different production.” They were BOTH produced by DiC and indeed had many of the same creative individuals involved in both shows. A casual appraisal of the shows imdb and wikipedia pages will lead you to discovering this information. I don’t know what you think the word “production” means.

giving a character back traits they should have had in the first place is not “progression.” Tails STARTED OUT as a side kick, pilot, AND YES mechanically inclined gadgetear in the video games. The show doesn’t need THREE SEASONS to get to where the games STARTED AT.

Source? He worked WITH SEGA of America, I’m pretty sure they could have given him a copy of the japanese manual and someone who can translate it to him if he asked for it. I’d like to see a source on this supposed claim of SoJ “not giving it” to him.
